Portraits

These photos were taken as a tester for the portrait project where I just went out and tried to take a few portrait photos to see how I could develop throughout learning more about this topic. The main problem with all of these photo is there all under exposed this is because i decided to do this tester late at night when lighting was not great. To make this better I could re shoot the photos at a different time of day or edit them in photoshop to create a better looking more exposed photos. From this i mainly learnt to change my exposure for darker shoots and worked on framing the photos to create better portraits in the future.

Portrait Photo Shoot

Screen Shot 2015-12-01 at 16.15.38

This was my first portrait photo shoot so was more about experimenting with different angles and looks on the photos. Unfortunately, with most of these photos they came out underexposed because of how late I was taking the photos and with minimal light I should of lowered my shutter speed a lot and opened my exposure to let a lot more light into my sensor to get a brighter photo. Overall this photo shoot was mainly for practise and learning about different ways in which to capture a face and that worked out well.

Portrait Research

Zun Lee

together

Zun Lee was an inspiration for my photographs. I found all these images on www.zunlee.com/streetportraits#0 where I looked through them and took certain aspects from many of the different photographs. I noticed that in some of his photos he had the models faces not fully facing the camera or their eye sight slightly slanted so they aren’t looking directly at the camera. I liked the look of this and wanted to incorporate it into my photos as I think it adds an edge to the standard photo. Zun Lee also focuses on adding interesting backgrounds in his photographs but also uses them to her advantage as they always make his models stand out a lot more and make the overall photo more aesthetically pleasing. He also tries to capture natural emotion on peoples which makes the photos look a lot more life like and a lot less staged. I want to be able to use all these aspects in my own photographs and develop my work to this sort of style while incorporating some of my own style into it.

Eric Lafforgue

Together

Eric Lafforgue main aspect that I like is his framing of all his photos. Eric’s photos can be found at www.ericlafforgue.com. He mainly shoots with an open exposure to create that very large depth of field in his photos, this is a aspect I would very much like to include in my own work. I think the sharp focus is something which makes his photos so appealing to me and something that really stands out. Although he uses this very sharp focus some images he decides not to focus on the face but in turn focus on something on the body which is easily recognisable and stands out. I may experiment with this idea in some of my photographs and see how it stands out. Eric uses very plain backgrounds in his photos which makes the models stand out a lot more. This also helps with not missing detail on the models faces or body’s as there is nothing else to focus on within the photo. I am going to shoot some of my photos against plain backgrounds to see if I can create the same effect with a shallow depth of field as well. Overall Eric’s photos are some of the best portraiture work I have seen and inspired me to create work like his.

Eric Kim

Togther

Eric Kim creates some very odd but great looking portraits. All Eric’s photos can be found erickimphotography.com. He chooses interesting looking models to use in his portraits which makes them a lot better to look at as they mainly fill the entire frame. By having a interesting looking model he doesn’t really need to focus on including much in the backgrounds to add into his photos. I may try to fill some of my own photos with a whole model face and not include much background to create the same effect that he has in some of his own photos. Eric also focuses on having one or two colours that really pop in his photos which is what draws your eye in straight away to his photographs. The framing and incorporation with bright colours really makes his photos stand out from the normal portrait photos this is what draw me into this photographer and I hope I will be able to recreate this effect. Another thing that interested me was his black and white street portraits which have mainly been taken in low light environments but with editing he has changed them to black and white and played around with certain setting to still make the photos stand out from the crowd, I may experiment with black and white photography within my portraits.

Triptych

Triptic

For this brief we were set the task of going to a certain geographical location finding things on the floor that have a link between them. My geographical location was on top of steep hill the cobble courtyard between the castle and cathedral, because this is such a busy and public place it has constant cleaning going on throughout the day it is hard to find things scattered across the floor so instead I went up on a Friday night just after everyone would have left to go to the clubs. At this time there was a lot of rubbish and I found three things on the floor that all linked together. The link between these 3 items is the fact they are all used on a normal night out. This consists of a bottle, a lighter (now broken) and gum which are all normally around on a night out clubbing. I took these items out of there locations and bought them back to my room where I tried to create a mini studio shoot. Unfortunately, my lighting wasn’t perfect so in every shot even though the settings were kept the same the exposure came out slightly different which overall doesn’t help with creating a flawless triptych shot. If I was to shoot all these photos again I would try to use better lighting so overall all the shots came out with the same background lighting which would create a better flow across all the photos. Overall I think the idea behind the objects used is very creative and a different perspective on a use of a geographical location and the overall photos capture still life very well keeping the items from blurring in with the background also being very sharply in focus at all points making it clear and easy to see.

Triptych Photo shoot

This photo shoot was taken in my room with a large piece of white card folded and stuck up against one of the walls. I did this to create a plain back drop in my room because I did not have access to a proper studio. For the lighting I used my desk lamp aimed towards the object this would of worked better if I had multiple light sources to create even lighting across the objects I think the photos would of came out much better. The photo shoot was successful and I got the photos I was after.
